Cool Bands
Republica (Official Homepage)
A very cool British band that manages to blend (sometimes quite heavy) guitar with keyboards and some elements of techno. The chorus of their first single, Ready to Go makes an excellent Windows startup sound.
Iron Maiden (Official Homepage)
The best band in England, full stop!! the first song I heard by them was Holy Smoke from the No Prayer for the Dying album and I immediately had to buy their entire back-catalogue. Their sound has changed somewhat, with the replacement of Bruce Dickinson by Blaze Bayley as vocalist for the X Factor album. Their new sound took some getting used to (it's a lot darker) but it was worth it.
Helloween (Official Homepage)
Germany's greatest export since Michael Schumacher!! Helloween started out as a thrash band, then mellowed somewhat (their most mellow was probably the Chameleon album). As with Iron Maiden, they changed their vocalist (Andi Deris ousting Michael Kiske) but they also replaced their drummer (the awesome Uli Kusch replacing the late Ingo Schwichtenberg) for Master of the Rings and the result is a real return to their roots. Better Than Raw, their latest album (at the time of writing) has some incredibly heavy stuff on it!
Megadeth (Official Homepage)
Aha! An American band makes it onto my links page!! Megadeth once described themselves as the "State of the Art Speed Metal Band" - whether that's still applicable, I don't know! I got into them around the time of the Rust in Peace album (particularly Hangar 18). I reckon they've been getting better and better after that!
Nine Inch Nails (Unofficial Homepage)
How do you describe Nine Inch Nails? Industrial? I think they're more than that! Primarily one man, Trent Reznor, the music is a combination of crunching guitars, synthesisers and live and sampled drums. Live, NIN are FANTASTIC!! I was lucky enough to see them just after the release of The Downward Spiral at the Kentish Town Forum in London. Truly incredible!
NIN were also responsible for the music in the tediously mind-numbing game, Quake - probably the only good thing about it!
2 Unlimited (Unofficial Site)
2 Unlimited were considered by some to be a vacuous, talentless band. I personally liked them very much! Their music generally makes me feel cheerful, and you can't tell me that after hearing their most famous track, No Limit, you didn't have the tune going 'round your head for the rest of the day!!
Disturbed (Official Site)
I first heard Disturbed while in America in 2000. Their song Stupify and their cover of Tears for Fear's Shout sparked my interest and their debut album The Sickness confirmed it! Their subsequent album, Believe is also very good.
Linkin Park (Official Site)
Linkin Park was another band I heard in the States in 2000. Their debut single, One Step Closer got me hooked and I've enjoyed most of their releases since.
Drowning Pool (Official Site)
Drowning Pool first came to my attention when their track Bodies was used as the music for a WWE Pay-per-view (back when it was the WWF!) Their debut album, Sinner is fantastic, very reminiscent of Disturbed. Sadly their vocalist, Dave Williams, passed away on 14th August 2002.
Bjorn Lynne
Bjorn Lynne is a composer of computer game music. I first encountered his work on the Amiga, where he contributed to the Crusaders demo team. He subsequently worked for Team 17, and wrote the music to the Worms games, among others. He also releases albums under the names Bjorn Lynne and Divinorum.
Allister Brimble
Allister Brimble is another musician that I first heard of because of his work on the Amiga. Like Mr Lynne, he continues to write music for computer games.
World of Spectrum FTP Site
This site features original Sinclair Spectrum music in various formats. Great for all Speccy nostalgics!
RKO: The Def Guide to C64 MP3 remakes
I never owned a Commodore 64, but the theme tunes were often the same on the Spectrum. This site features remixed versions of those themes. I must have a go at one myself, one day!
